Below is another image from Aphaisic Screams, the next Derna book. This image has yet to get the color treatment so bear with me.

This image is unusual in that, like the last book Liquid Dreams, there is virtually no nudity in it at all. In fact there were only three images from Liquid Dreams that had bare boobs, one of which was contributed. Derna isn't really about sex, or murder, or violence, but a marriage of all three to portray why someone does what they do. Aphaisic Screams, unlike Liquid Messiah has a more coherent plotline and is easier to follow because of it. It also refers back to Liquid, but doesn't necessarily mean that you need to read Liquid to understand what is going on. I've ramled enough. Coloring to do.(>:))

Earlier today I was doing my usual web browsing between bouts of writing, drawing and housework before going to the day job. I found a few interesting items image wise, that looked awfully familiar. In fact it was photos that had been used as (ahem) 'reference'.

In all fields of art, reference is used...regularly. It's all good and well, but there are some out there, hiding behind nome de plumes, that swear they don't use reference or trace, and that's when the wheels come off. Now I've decided to give you folk a chance to win a thousand pounds, straight from my own pocket.

The grand goes to the person presenting me with the photo and photographers name (if indeed ithey exist) that (may or may not) have found itself being traced to produce the following image. The winner (?) will need to supply their name, where the image was located, who took the photo and provide a layover of the art/photo to prove that indeed this was the image it was traced from (allegedly). The closing date is the 14th of February 2011. It should be noted that the alleged photo may not even exist (>:)), all will be revealed on Feb 14th.

You may hav noticed that this blog has transformed into something other than a tool for me to promote my work. It has become something much more personal. I now it gets read, but by who god only knows(>:))

Anyway it's evolved into a semi diary, as much for myself as aything else. It helps me keep track, primarily as my memory problems are growing. A recent visit to the sawbones has done little to ease my stress. More tests are being arranged and more blood taken and more questions asked....all without an answer as to why the problem persists.

I now try to use other means to provoke a response from my deteriorating recall. At the moment I trawl youtube to find music I once liked, in an (up to now)fruitless effort to help take me back to the parts of my memory that I think are just simply not there anymore. The opinion of the medical profession is that the loss is temporary and once the chemical cause of the issue has been rectified I should have normal recall once more.

We shall see.

It is frustrating having people around you refer to instances that I simply have no idea what they are on about. Frustrating for me as I can see the toll it's taking on those closest to me. It's a case of waiting.

So there I was, doing my day job thing at a well known games retailer, when the blonde woman I was serving asks me,
"Did you go to Belmont Academy?"

I must admit the quiz took me aback and completely knocked me off my stride. Here was someone who did look a bit familiar to me, but didn't ring any bells, that clocked me for exactly who I was despite not having seen me for the last 25 years.
She (Joanne) was in my art class and as I remember things was something of a rival. We exchanged emails etc and then she went on her way with her family.

But it stayed with me. The chance meeting. The recognition.

If I'm brutally honest, there are two things to mention.

It's made me realise just how much I can't remember, just how much of my memory is missing.

Secondly, when I hear what everyone elese has accomplished, and the jobs they're doing, I can't help but think how much time I've wasted on producing the images I do.

I console myself with looking forward and achieving everything I possibly can from this moment on, while keeping those that mean most to me close.(>:))

It's late, I've managed to get to work today despite the horrific snowy conditions outside (about 3 feet of snow so far) and once again I'm tired.

It took me a while, because I'm getting slow in my old age, but I now know who reported the "twas the night before christmas" image on Deviantart. I don't know if it was an attempt to rile me but it won't work, I simply can't be bothered.

So, I'll shortly be posting some promo art for the upcoming release of "The Darke Child", by myself and written by Terry Hooper (not Hopper as I misplet it before, my apologies). It's rather fetching as you'll see soon.

Christmas is almost here and as a result working the day job for toys for the kiddies has taken up much of my time....that said I have been hard at work on some nice pics to warm you over the winter months....

As I've said before this time of year can be happy, but can also be a season of much sadness. For me personally it is a time of changes, I'm soon to find out what it is that is going on in my noodle, why I can't remember anything from one minute to the next, why I'm dropping things and why my eyesight continues to degrade. At current rates I won't be able to see anything but a blur in a year. So I'm a little stressed. Like anything to do with the medical profession they take their sweet fucking time saying anything, all the while you imagine all sorts of disaster and gloom. When this started I made up my mind to work flat out and finish all that I can should the worst happen. Much to look forward to. Much to fear. Much to hope for........

At this time of year everyone sets about getting ready for the BIG day. Huge amounts are spent on items worth keeping and much is spent on pure commercial crap. Don't get me wrong, I'm not about to bang on about how this is a time for Christian faiths, not at all.

Two years ago I was in a position where I had nothing. I had a crap car, a tv and an xbox and that was about it. I needed a mate to house me in his place because my life fell apart. I wandered around Asda, watching people fill trolleys with outrageous amounts of food, much of it would spoil and be thrown away, while barely able to feed myself. Many days were spent in bed because I would rather sleep than be awake and unable to fill my belly. My circumstances happened through bad management who were unable to accept responsibility for what had happened to me at work, I had to spend the next nine months fighting them in limbo, until they were faced with a court case they couldn't win ....they settled. One for the little people of the world.

This is a time of year that reminds me of the despair I felt. The apathy of the system unwilling and unable to help me. And of a society too obsessed with fulfilling it's own selfish needs to bother with those less fortunate.

I hate Christmas. Christmas is for the children in your lives. It's for being with those that really matter in your life. And remembering those that are no longer with us.

This Christmas, think less of how much you can eat, and more of those that have nothing or not enough. Think of who you want to be with, who you want to see smile and those that make you laugh.

Now I'm lucky enough to be surrounded by those that matter. Things can change for the better, but it takes effort and help. Who will you help this year?

Below is apiece of text that I put up on my Deviantart page after "twas the night before christmas" was complained about being offensive.

It always surprises me how petty and juvenile some people can be. My latest piece "twas the night before christmas" was reported by someone as being offensive and needed a mature tag. Now to put things into perspective, virtually none of my other work has mature tags, so why this one. Is it because Santa has been decapitated? If it were that offensive then surely my id pic with old saint nick in the bg throat cut and trussed up with fairy lights would have been flagged also.

Much as I love deviantart, it seems that the small minded, shallow, jealous, irrelevant insects strike again at the heart of someone doing just what they want, an ideaology that DA tries to promote. Obviously they (DA) have to act on complaints, but I think that the complainers should be identified, clearly cowering behind an assumed pen name is not anonymity enough for them. They hurl their withered, skank ridden bile with no threat of recrimination.

They make me sick and sad.

They spoil things of enjoyment.

I wish them a slow, lingering, painful disease before dying in obscurity.

I'm tired.
Tired of the bullshit life brings on a daily basis, not from the comics scene though, just in general. I look at the computer that I sit in front of each and every day, and wonder what happened to my life before this flat screened demon soaked up so much of my time. Each time I open my emails there are a proliferation of emails from African businessmen seeking my help to put millions into a safe bank account. There are the emails from Facebook saying I've been poked, invited, requested etc. Don't start me on the crap from HSBC and Lloyds saying that someone has accessed my accounts (that don't actually exist).

Bullshit.

Then we have the tv.
Bombarding us with product information of products we could realy live without, the kitchen appliances, the easily affordable huge tvs, the phones, the tablets, the computers that we simply MUST have to keep our carbon footprints in sync with all our technologically dependant peers, the adverts trying to guilt us into helping the third world, adverts, adverts, adverts, drink this, eat this, stay thin, slap this on your face to stay young, then the bland offerings of so called -not rigged- reality talent shows, the constant stream of shows obsessed with helping us on the property ladder or improving the one we have, the chat shows showing us the dregs of our species fighting over who impregnated who, the endless'variety' of me too American cop shows.

Bullshit!

I go to the supermarket, and it all starts again, this brand, that brand, save when you buy multiple items, so you do. Spend, spend, spend unneccessary amounts that you can ill afford.

As for work. Ha! I'm lucky enough to be employed, but I feel for those that have to go through a selection process, still having to face the JobCentre crew on a regular basis, heaven help you if you go to what they call stage two, or three.

Tired, tired, tired.

So I draw.
I draw naked women.
I draw violence.
I draw time travellers, beings from other dimensions, shady government officials,fantastical creatures, sci-fi heroes and women in peril, all to a subdiet of ultra-violent videogames and hate filled, angry, music.

Then I go look at the stars and decide that none of it really matters.
All that counts is that I have her, and them.

Three things.
First thing.
Since I now work alone, I've found that I can be more focussed on what I'm doing. For example the Darke Child progresses, so much so that there is now some promo art pages to be inserted into the European only reprints of Maeve and 2 Hot Girls, now that the MyExcess rebranding is almost complete. Not only that this time has shown me what is truly important in my own life, while drawing remains an integral part of it, comics however are fast becoming a thing of the past. In this country there is too much hypocrisy inherent in both the creative and consumer base around which comics exist. Add to the mix the massive changes in both my personal and professional life and comics find themselves pushed further down the food chain.

Don't get me wrong I still love drawing comics and intend to keep going for as long as there is breath in me, but with new outside interest in two of my properties it makes more sense for me to concentrate on those. I'm no writer, but it seems that is what has captured the attention recently....fate has a warped sense of humour it seems.

Second thing.
For my own amusement while the cooker was doing it's thing, I decided to put together a figure sheet, it got somewhere before last night before the food was ready, and I still have lots to add to it. It'll be a jumbled mess I know but like all the things I do for MyExcess this is done purely for myself.

Third thing.
Many moons ago, I did a stint as a photographer, had I not went through my junk email folder I would never have remembered about these particular pics on this website. Back on track

After the last two weeks of uncertain diagnosis I'm finally feeling better and getting back to work. My woman, being a woman, heard something outside the front of the house and half stood up half bent over to get a look at what was happening. Being behind her I got a great eyeful of her behind in super tight jeans and the image stayed with me....no HAUNTED me, so much that I felt I had to do something...the result is the posted sketch....I should add she wasn't wearing anything like this but one can only dream.(>:)) It's called 'Peeking'.

Now that the writing phase of the next Derna book is well underway, I thought it was high time to come up with a title, so the next book in the Derna series will be titled "Aphaisic Screams".

The intent is to have it ready for christmas, but time will tell, I'll post some images when they're ready.(>:))

Old ground...

I was thinking for a while about redrawing an old story. I like the story even though it shows it's age somewhat -being written and drawn fifteen years ago- but not particularly liking the art that went with it. Then I looked at what I was planning over the next twelve months, suddenly the idea of redrawing just twenty pages started to lose its appeal. So, the strip has been relettered -legibly this time- composited properly and sits awaiting other material to accompany it in a planned anthology.

It might seem an odd idea to put new material with old, sometimes with genres clashing, but like previous books like 'Tripped on a Cloud' and 'How Far Can Too Far Go', this is my way of preserving the material I still have, against any future losses of work. Also there is nothing worse than eternally ploughing the same field of dreams and ideas. At the moment I'm drawing the third volume of Terry Hooper's Goddess Trilogy, 'The Darke Child', which has very little thematically, in common with the previous parts. It has common elements but delivers something more than a little unexpected. At the same time I'm writing a new Derna book, but unlike 'Liquid Messiah' the story this time has a proper start, middle and ending...unlike the non chronological episodic nature of 'Liquid Messiah'. It's possible to follow a project with new material that has a differnt approach, but not necessarily abandoning what has directly preceded it in terms of content and format.

Too many films, comics, books etc try to follow what has come before, but instead of adding something new, they merely retread old ground. MyExcess is an attempt to avoid this pattern, it's path to now may be seen as a success or a shambolic mess....

Regardless of either viewpoint, there is much more to come.(>:))

I know I said that the Halloween Posterbook Special would be available from the 24th September....well, all things were going well until I wasn't. Well that is. A rare period of illness has prevented me from getting the damn thing out on time, and for that i apologise, it will appear shortly.

For the nextweek though I will be recovering from the numerous stabbings of needles by the medical fraternity, in an effort to diagnose the problem.....with any luck it will turn out that it's stress, or diet or something else non serious. What I can't fathom out is why on shows like House and CSI they get blood results and DNA and whatever back within a day...whereas I have to wait three at least...oh well...on with the waiting(>:))

I can now announce the fact that I'm looking for artists to assist in putting together a comic book. Not a traditional comic, but an actual book of strips. The scripts are written for it and to be honest I just don't have the time to draw the whole thing. So, I'm looking for collaborators.

The book itself won't e available in the UK, it's going to Europe primarily and has a publisher attached to it. Consequently there is money in the project, but the book needs to be finished efore the contracts are signed....twitchy publishers eh?

I've written most of it, some scripts are being tinkered by a couple of other authors. The format is that there will be a number of self contained strips, but each has a way of being spun off and continued.

So there we have it...no more Underground Overkill from me...the name was a group effort, a group I'm no longer part of, therefore I'm told I no longer have permission to use the name. Fair enough. It has to be noted though, that if you google it, there are quite a number of underground overkills out there...but as promised I won't be using it.

I was also told that the sci fi comic I was planning with Jim Stewart of Ganjaman fame better not appear with the name Megaverse "as that name is taken." Again fair enough. The name for the new sci fi comic from MyExcess has been decided and will be unveiled when it's ready....which means don't hold your breath.

In the mean time work on The Darke Child with Terry Hooper progresses as does work on the next Derna book...here's a wee preview.(>:))

Just a quick note.....
Some of the books have been withdrawn from the MyExcess storefront at Lulu, in particular all of the Underground Overkill titles.
I won't go into detail, lest I let myself in for more unwanted hostility, needless to say they will resurface at a later date after something of a rebranding. More details on format, contributors etc will be available when the redesigned Underground Overkill site (http//:undergroundoverkill.tripod.com) goes live on august 21st. From then on you will see what lies in store for "Underground Overkill volume 1", "Babes, Bullets and Blades" and new title "Cuties, Curves and Capes". As for the Posterbook, it may reappear after a reshuffle of the contents.

It should also be noted that there are new titles now available on the lulu storefront, we have secured the rights to republish Terry Hooper's "2 Hot Girls" and "Sizzlin' Sisters", as a pre-amble to the impending release of Terry's "The Darke Child", the third volume in his goddess trilogy. Ahem...pardon me while I rant.
Some time ago I was pushing to get a UK based comic book together....but I was shot down after being told that the time scale I was proposing was unrealistic (this was April and I was looking to get something out by August/September) not only that, it seemed that many who had an interest may have been more inclined to get involved if I wasn't. Imagine my surprise at the recent activity on comicscorner where they are now planning on getting said comic together sooner rather than later, mainly because it would seem that there are two new publications on the horizon from some big Uk names, among them Mark Millar. The joke is on them though, had they listened a few months ago, we would now be nearing completion of our goal, however, they are still on the starting blocks and to be perfectly blunt, the crew at comicscorner lack drive to get anything done. Since I stepped back there has not been a collective effort appear in print. I can't see that changing anytime soon.(>:))

A new post at last, and very possibly the last concerning artwork by me....not sure why i bother with this thing as no one reads it....anyhoooo

.....I've spent the last year knocking myself out producing art and books and comics and recieved well, fuck all for it. I'm not talking about money because this isn't about money...it's about the cameraderie of your peers, and to be honest, they've pretty much all fucked me right off. I've done my best by them, and been largely ignored for the effort I've put into stuff under the underground overkill label. In fact , mostly all I've recieved for my efforts is a slagging off on the comics corner website. I've been assured that's not the case though....oh well must all be in my mind....as usual.

So, do I continue, or just throw the idea of drawing away.....I'll give it some thought.

Topped off with a gallery of pin ups by some of Scotlands leading underground artists including Curt Sibling, Dave Alexander with rising star Andy lee and digital diva Alex R McCarthy.

Opposite is the pencil rough for the cover art, by me (not traced-honest guv) Dave Alexander is doing the inks and colour maestro Curt Sibling will be making our eyes cry with joy. Look for it early March (assuming no technical difficulties).

I have't posted much for a couple of months, now though I'm back in the groove, so expect more news every few days...assuming of course there's someone out there lookin in once in a while.

now if you read through it, you'll see glowing reviews for Khaki Shorts and Nexion and all the creators within....except me. It says "Dave Gordon's blatant tracing of ....", now why would he single me out for this. He doesn't mention Buster Cherry, he doesn't even mention the piece of work he's criticising....I'm not even worth that. Now I don't know Gavin Lees, I don't know what this prick has against me, all I know is I think he stepped over a line. I suppose everyone has an opinion, even if it's wrong.(>:))

Anyhoo..let's move on.....

Tripped on a Cloud

Tripped on a Cloud is my newest volume of work. It covers the last twenty years and reprints newly found archive material such as the first issue of Horror Cafe and some previously thought "lost" strips featuring Detective Mackie from the Derna strips. Throw in some pin ups, and soem favorite images of dancers and you have 150 pages of Tripped on a Cloud.

My favorite movie is Bladerunner...in one scene Deckard is told,
"...if you're not a cop you're little people....you know what happens to little people."
It was a reference to Deckard being threatened, if you're not with us, you're against us...and we'll get you.
Well I'm little people...but I went against the machine that is big business....it took a while, but I beat them. For some reason Lacklustre (think about it...sounds like?) sent out an email telling colleagues to remove themselves from my Facebook fan site or face disciplinary...why would the yellow and blue be afraid of me....maybe because of what happened last year and what I could say about it.....time will tell.
